Job Interview Question What Are Your Salary Requirements

Job Interview Question What Are Your Salary RequirementsJob Interview Question What Are Your Salary RequirementsIts the point during every vorstellungsgesprch process thats met with held breath and an inevitable sense of dread. No, were not talking about your background check and the possibility for uncovering those host of parking tickets from a few years back. When it comes to interview question induced stress, no topic quite induces as much anxiety as when it comes time to talk salary.Whether its with a recruiter, hiring manager, or even our fellow co-workers, talking about your salary has a curious taboo quality in corporate America. In the interview room, however, its an inevitable part of factoring in a candidates qualifications and what theyll cost the companys bottom line should they be hired. Candidates should never broach the subject on their own, but do need to be prepared to address salary requirements as they will certainly be asked towards the closing stages of any inte rview process. With that in mind, keep reading for our guide on how to address the job interview question what are your salary requirements?Do Your HomeworkWhether in the classroom or interview room, the best piece of advice given to candidates involves doing their homework on all aspects of the position they may be applying for. To prepare to answer the salary requirements question, start by researching the average salaries of the job title you may be after. There are numerous websites out there that provide laser beam focus on just this topic. Payscale.com, salary.com, and Simply Hiredssalary tool are just a few of our favorite salary analyzers. Armed with this information youll be better equipped to provide salary numbers that fit industry norms for your role.Tell the TruthWhile certain states have recently outlawed specifically asking candidates to provide their current salary number, this isnt true across the board. Unless youre in one of the handful of exceptions, be prepared to be asked about your current salary as a benchmark for helping set reasonable expectations for a promotion or match.Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to pad your numbers with your answer. Checking current salary is often one of the last items an employer will follow up on before making an offer. Feel free to include items such as retirement and bonus in your figures to the potential employer, but list them out as such. Also, if your previous company was underpaying you, feel free to add in details such as the compensation rate would below market value. Keep things on the up and up and avoid the unfortunate circumstance of your offer being rescinded based on a falsehood over salary numbers.Dont Sell Yourself ShortSure, you may be excited about the opportunities a new position has to offer. You may even know that there were numerous qualified candidates and that the market is highly competitive. Unless you can binnensee the upsides (financial or otherwise) however, avoid lowball ing your salary number as an attempt to land the gig. Candidates who sell themselves short in the compensation game will often have less long-term satisfaction with their position. This can lead to feeling undervalued or appreciated and can create resentment which will affect performance or see you searching for a new job sooner than youd prefer. If youre a strong candidate, ask the employer for what you feel youre worth. Absent unusual circumstances such as a tangible opportunity for future advancement or other fulfillment in your professional life, dont sell your salary expectation short. Even if you miss out on an opportunity or two, in the long run, youll find a better fit with someone who values your skills as much as you do.NegotiateLast but not least on our list of advice for answering the salary requirements question, if an employer comes back in a range that isnt where you wanted to be, know that the initial number isnt always set in stone. Instead of reluctantly turning the job down or accepting a salary that doesnt make the bills, try asking if there is any room for improvement. If the conversation is respectful, employers will often be open to providing additional compensation. The trick to any salary negotiation is to enter with caution and professionalism. Lay out your thought process for asking for additional wiggle room. If an increase in salary isnt available, see if there are other compensation forms such as guaranteed bonuses, a sign on bonus, or guaranteed annual raise. If youre a strong candidate, employers will often find the room to make your number work. While there are many tactics out there for answering questions about salary requirements, remember that at the end of the day you need to be happy and fulfilled in your position or no money in the world will be enough to make up for your satisfaction. Keep negotiations and conversations about salary professional and reasonable, and use plenty of facts to back up your request. Follow the abo ve guidance and youll be well on your way to acing the dreaded salary requirements question and moving on towards accepting that offer for a dream position.

Preparing for the Candidate Interview

Preparing for the Candidate bewerbungsbewerbungsinterviewPreparing for the Candidate InterviewPreparing for the Candidate InterviewYour preparation for the interview has equipped you with a number of questions that will help you get to know and evaluate candidates. But theres plenty more to do before, during and after the interview. Follow these tipsBefore the InterviewPut Candidates at Ease Interviewing can be stressful, so do your best to help candidates relax. Make sure each candidate is greeted and escorted, if necessary, to the interview location. Start with low-key questions.Dont Judge on First Impressions in the Interview Process Weve all met them people who dont make a great first impression but end up being great employees. To make sure you dont overlook these diamonds in the rough, withhold judgment until youve had the chance to thoroughly evaluate a candidates capabilities and potential.During the InterviewTell the Candidate a Little About the Job While you dont want to d ominate the interview time, you should start with a brief summary of the position, including the prime responsibilities, reporting structure, key challenges and performance criteria. This will help the candidate provide relevant examples and responses.Dont Be Afraid to Improvise Plan your questions, but dont feel you must ask only those youve chosen in advance. Be responsive to what the candidate tells you, and build new questions off their answers, says Shelly Goldman, executive recruiter with The Goldman Group Advantage, an executive recruiting firm in Reston, Virginia.Listen If you are doing most of the talking during an interview, you will not be able to obtain enough information to distinguish between candidates or to determine a candidates true competencies. A general guideline is to spend 80 percent of your time listening and only 20 percent talking.Take Notes While you wont want to transcribe everything the candidate says, do write down important points, key accomplishments, good examples and other information that will help you remember and fairly evaluate each candidate. An interview guide, prepared in advance, will make note-taking easier and give you a structure for capturing key information.Invite Candidates to Ask Questions This can be the most valuable part of the interview. Why do they want to be here is it the challenge of the job, advances in the industry or something specific about your company? Or is the candidate fixated on salary, benefits and time off? If the candidate has no questions, this should be a red flag, especially for senior-level employees. Make a note of what the candidate asks, and be sure to follow up if you cant provide the answer immediately.Follow Legal Interviewing Guidelines It is critically important that every interviewer at your company, from HR clerks to top executives, understand and follow legal hiring guidelines. The easiest way to keep your interviews fully compliant is to ask only questions that relate to the job, eliminating the potential for bias by not introducing questions or scenarios that will elicit irrelevant information. After the InterviewLet Candidates Know What They Can Expect A pet peeve of many job seekers is that they are left hanging after an interview, or they are promised follow-up that never comes. If the candidate is a good fit, be clear about what the next steps will be. And if the candidate is not a good fit? Always end the interview on a positive note, but be genuine, says Goldman. Dont tell the candidate to call you if you dont mean it.Compare Notes and Reach Consensus The post-interview evaluation is the time to compare notes and advance the hiring decision. Each interviewer should be prepared to back up remarks and recommendations with specific examples and notes from the interview.Deepen the Interview Questions as You Narrow the Field Subsequent interviews with finalists are valuable opportunities to learn more about them. Consider adding show-me exercises suc h as a strategic-planning exercise or a walk-me-through-what-youd-do activity involving a real business challenge the individual would be facing.Create a Positive Image for Your OrganizationJoan Woodward, assistant vice president at Fifth Third Bank, remarks that the job market is always competitive when looking for good people. We need to realize that were selling ourselves as much as candidates are trying to sell themselves, she says. Its important to treat people well during the interview process. I never want to lose a potential customer or cause a candidate to have a negative impression of our company.Your interview process reflects the value your company places on each candidate and, by extension, each employee. Be a good ambassador for your company by conducting a professional interview, communicating honestly and basing hiring decisions on an honest evaluation of each candidates capabilities. Not only will you make great hires, but youll build goodwill in the community and e nhance your future recruiting efforts.

The Costs (and Benefits) of Employee Turnover

The Costs (and Benefits) of Employee TurnoverThe Costs (and Benefits) of Employee TurnoverSmart businesses are concerned about turnoverbecause turnover is expensive. There are several costs that arise when you need to replace an employee. High Cost of Employee Turnover Recruiting These can be high or low, depending on your organization and the level of the position. A grocery store that is constantly recruiting and hiring cashiers doesnt have a huge incremental cost to recruit one more person. But if youre looking for a Chief Information Officer- a highly specialized job- you may have to hire a headhunter, and that can cost you around one-third of the final annual salary. Thats a big chunk of change. Plus, all of the time spent reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and making the final decision are hours that your employees would otherwise spend working. Recruiting can cost a good deal of money. Training Some companies have platzdeckchen programs for training that you can ea sily quantify. This is common in entry-level positions. But higher level positions also have training costs, even if these are bedrngnis formalized. Just the time spent getting all the computer equipment set up, passwords procured, orientation completed, and the numerous hours of asking and answering questions are all wrapped up in training costs. Time to Get Up to Speed In a lot of jobs, we figure it takes you six months to become fully functional. Each company is different, so even if you have tons of experience as an accountant, you still need to learn all the historical information about your new company before you are completely competent. As a result, youre not as productive in a new job as you would have been in your old job. When Turnover Is Good for Your Business Does this mean that turnover is always bad and you should try to retain your employees no matter what? No. A certain percentage of voluntary turnover is, in fact, good and can benefit a business. What kind of turnover is good? The quick answer to this question is if the new person can bring enough added value to outweigh the costs of recruiting, training, and getting up to speed then the former employee leaving is a positive outcome. Here are examples of when turnover is good for your business. Bad Employees Lets face it not all employee problems are caused by management. There are some bad employees out there. Have you ever worked with a complete slacker? What about an employee who loved to steal leistungspunkt and slander her coworkers whenever possible? What about a gossip who couldnt keep his mouth shut? When one of these people quits, the heavens should rejoice. This voluntary termination has just saved the company the hassle of implementing a performance improvement plan, providing coaching, and doing damage control for all the problems the bad employee caused. Additionally, you have the truly bad employees- the ones who steal, sexually harass, are completely unreliable, or use foul language in the presence of customers. These people have to go, so its cheaper and easier if the person resigns than if you have to go through your companys termination procedures. (Even though all states except Montana are at-will states and you can fire people legally with no documentation, in practice, almost all companies follow specific, progressive discipline programs.) Miserable Employees Sometimes you have an employee who does a good job, so you cant fault that, but he seems miserable. Its not that hes underpaid or overworked, its just that he isnt happy with this job. When youre happy in your job, youll not only do better work but influence others positively as well. Conversely, one bad apple really can spoil the barrel. When an employee is miserable, its a great day when that person moves on. People With No Good Ideas When you are hired for a job, you often come in with great new ideas. However, if you dont work really hard at it, its easy to slip into the weve always don e it this way mode. This can mean a company can lack innovation. It doesnt have to be this way. Some people change and grow with the position, always coming up with the best practices and creative ways to solve problems. But some people dont. Your business can stagnate if you dont have any new ideas. Sometimes its nice when an employee quits so that you can bring on an employee with new, fresh ideas. Dont Panic When an Employee Quits Having an employee resign can sometimes feel like a punch to the gut. Sometimes, it is really bad for your business. Youll suffer not only in turnover costsbut in the lost potential that your former employee had. Its always worth spending time in self-reflection to figure out if you could have done anything differently. For instance, a voluntary quit is a reminder to double-check that your salaries are at market rateand ensure your policies and practices encourage a great workforce. But its also a time to evaluate if the quit is a blessing in disgui se. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Ring in 2015 with a look at behauptung three job description resolutions that put best practices and Simply Hired data to work for you.How Does Your Update Activity Compare? When was the last time your portfolio of job descriptions was updated? If it wasnt in the past year, youre in good company. Many companies create job descriptions, file them away and prioritize other, more urgent tasks. But did you ever consider how much that might impact your productivity and efficiency over the course of several years?Creating and updating job descriptions might seem like a low priority, but in reality it can affect recruitment, training, performance evaluations, compensation and even the quality of the candidates you attract. Job de scriptions and identifying essential functions can also offer important legal clarification for hiring, firing and functioning within an organization.Make A Change for 2015Depending on the size of your company and the number of job descriptions you maintain, commit a reasonable amount of time to review and update your portfolio of job descriptions. It may be hard to find an hour each week to do so, but the long-term productivity ROI will be worth it.If your company is simply too large for one person to take on this project, consider crowd-sourcing job description updates from your managers and their teams. Ask each manager to review the job descriptions for their areas, make changes and get feedback from key employees. When it comes to prioritizing which job descriptions to update, think about the major stressors, hiring difficulties and poor performing employees youve encountered in the past year. Use that insight to inform which batch to update first.Whats The Right Length? The aver age length of a job description across the best performing companies on Simply Hired in 2014 was 381 words, with an average job title of 4 words. This might surprise you, considering that many experts own best practices place the ideal job description length at one to three pages. Using a short snapshot version of a job is an increasingly popular way of attracting candidates online. It also appeals to the increasing number of candidates who read and apply to jobs via mobile and tablet devices. We dont recommend dropping your long version entirely. Working from a short job description for the duration of the hiring process puts managers in the position of making hiring decisions based on a picture of the job that is too broad, rather than one that is detailed. Use your snapshot description to entice candidates to apply. Provide your traditional one to th ree page job analysis version to your talent acquisition team to use during the actual interviewing process.Make A Change for 2015Edit your full-length job descriptions into snapshot versions with strategic formatting and realistic subtractions. resume paper is obsolete

resume paper is obsolete resume paper is obsolete A reader writes: What are your thoughts on resume paper? Considering how many retailers stock it (and have stocked it for decades), I imagine many people use it. Is there any value to it? What do hiring managers think of it, if they even notice? I am going to hereby free you from any reason to ever purchase resume paper again. No one cares if you use it. Or more precisely, they dont notice, or they dont care, or they think, Wow, people still use resume paper? And of course, the only time you even need to print your resume these days is when youre bringing it with you for an interview as a possible back-up copy. And at that point, if what wows them the most is your incredibly fine paper stock, things are not going well. Resume paper is a relic from days of yore when youd actually have a bunch of resumes nicely printed up and then mail them out in order to apply for jobs.  As you have probably noticed, thats not how you apply for jobs these days. Retailers still stock it because some people still believe theyre supposed to use it. But you are not.

8 Keys to Acing Your Editorial Internship

8 Keys to Acing Your Editorial Internship 8 Keys to Acing Your Editorial Internship Congratulations! You’ve scored one of those crazy-hard-to-come-by internships at a magazine, newspaper, or publishing company.Welcome to the ranks of editorial interns everywhere- you’ll be reporting till your hand aches, you’ll be editing till your eyes cross, and no, you probably won’t be getting paid for it. But trust me- if you ever want a full-time, paid job as a writer or editor, this internship will be crucial for your career.First, though, you’ve got to reap every benefit. Here’s some advice for maximizing your time, courtesy of someone who’s been there.1. Ask Lots of QuestionsSounds pretty simple, but when you’re the newbie in the office, it’s easy to feel silly asking questions that may seem obvious to co-workers within earshot. But go ahead and swallow that worry, because even the most veteran reporters ask questions. If you’re struggling with anything about the publishing system, run your questions by a kind cubicle mate. (It’s not you- the systems a re notoriously difficult and unintuitive.) When you’re writing a story, don’t be afraid to ask your editor exactly what he or she wants. (Most editors will appreciate it- less work for them down the line.) Remember, everyone around you was once in your shoes.2. Be Curious and ObservantDo you know when the magazine ships out? Find out. Or where your newspaper story goes when it leaves your editor’s hands? Ask. What big events and stories is the editorial team prepping for? Offer to help out, even if you’ll be the most behind-the-scenes periphery player. These are all details you should be aware of as you’re learning about the industry and trying to stay up on what’s going on in and outside of the office. And if you’re a part-time intern, you’re not off the hook- you’ll need to work extra hard so you don’t miss crucial events.  3. Attend Meetings (as Many as You Can)Editorial meetings are where the section leaders discuss published and future stories- and they’re incredibly important. Just by sitting in, you’ll increase your visibility while also figuring out how editors think. You’ll quickly learn what stories get traction, and which prompt discussion, smiles, even snores. If you’ve been invited to a meeting, that’s great- take good notes. If you haven’t, tell your boss you’d like to observe. It shows that you’re interested, eager to learn, and who knows? You could be in the right meeting at the right time and get a fantastic story.  4. See Your Assignments (All of Them!) to the EndWhen you’re given an opportunity to write a story (even if it’s just 200 words for the lowly weekly online newsletter), give it all you’ve got. Editors might not be floored by every inch of copy you turn in, but they will remember that you put energy into the assignments they threw at you, even the mundane ones. And once you’ve submitted a story, don’t let it slip out of your mind. A few days later, ask your boss when it will be published. A sk for feedback, and offer to make any more necessary changes. This will help ensure the story is moved along the production line and actually gets used.  5. Pitch Your Own StoriesPitching your own stories is a good idea for several reasons: It shows initiative, it gives you the chance to write about something that’s interesting to you, and it might allow you to work with new people who aren’t in your section.A great way to get your pitches approved is to find uncommon stories, ones that haven’t been written before. Or, try to find a fresh take on an already-covered topic. If you’re in a new city you aren’t familiar with, hit the streets and check it out. Do any striking people, shops, or events catch your eye?And don’t be afraid to think outside the box. I spent one summer interning at a magazine but took a short trip to try out to be a ball girl at the U.S. Open. I thought about writing a short story about it, but knew it wasn’t a fit for the print version of the mag azine. And after looking on the website for a nook to no avail, I decided, “Nah, I won’t bother.” But the day before my trip, I summoned the courage to discuss it with my editor. She loved the idea and told me there actually was a blog it would work well for. I was thrilled and able to add one more story- in a different medium no less- to my portfolio.6. Take Feedback Like a ProSo you turned in your story, and you’re so excited about how it ended up- until you get it back and find it more marked up than a graffiti wall. That’s OK. Grab your thick skin, and take a good look. Make sure you understand why each edit was made. If you have questions, ask your editor, and see if she can elaborate on her comments. One way to ward off the red pen shock is to initially ask your editor for a side-by-side editing session. You’ll be able to see more clearly what direction she wants the story to go in, and you’ll learn a lot about her preferences and editing process.7. Find MentorsMu ch of your career trajectory will depend on who you know, so build as many relationships during your internship as you can. (An editor from my last internship now is the person I turn to for career advice.) If you feel like you haven’t yet formed that connection, ask your boss to coffee- we all know journalists love coffee! Even more, though, people love talking about themselves and the paths they took to get to where they are today. Take advantage of the talented colleagues you have around you to learn about your field. Bonus: Once they know you on a more intimate level, they’ll be able to give you better advice for your future.8. Collect Your ClipsThe references you developed and stories you write throughout your internship are your ticket to a job in journalism. So collect copies of all your stories- electronically and in print- and track down several hard copies of your best ones. (Hey, your mom probably wants a dozen to pass out to her friends.) One easy way to get electron ic copies is to access the publication’s PDF archive. Then, when it’s time to send a clip, you’ll already have a high-resolution copy in the right format. Most importantly, have fun, relish that official company email address, and sop up all you can. Journalism jobs, in any capacity, can be incredibly exciting, and thanks to your hard work, you snagged a front-row seat to the presses.Photo courtesy of Juerg Vollmer.

Law Practice Management Software to Maximize Efficiency Legal

Law Practice Management Software to Maximize Efficiency Legal Law Practice Management Software to Maximize Efficiency Legal Almost all law firms are now using some form of law practice management software to streamline workflow and improve client services. From solo practitioners using Outlook to manage email trails and schedules, to large firms using integrated enterprise systems, law practice management software has become a popular tool in the legal profession. Take a look at Robert Half Legal's Future Law Office research for more on the latest ways law firms are making use of technology to manage the practice of law. Law practice management software to increase efficiency and case capacity Many law firms, even small firms and solo practitioners, have eagerly embraced law practice management software as a means to substantially reduce the number of work-hours legal teams are currently investing in low-end tasks like tracking billables and generating reporting, and increase case capacity .   Results from a Blue Hill Research study recently released by LexisNexis reveals that many law firms using law firm practice management software are able to convert 20 to 100 percent of their nonbillable time to billable hours. Average break-even periods vary, but depending on the size and complexity of your firm, the system you choose and how much of the implementation you can handle in-house, the numbers suggest some smaller systems can pay for themselves in weeks. To evaluate the many law practice management software products on the market, it’s important to remember that vendors offer a wide variety of options. Your choices will vary from comprehensive full-enterprise systems, a kind of all-you-can-eat model, to modular packages, where you select individual components a la carte from a menu of options. You will want to consult with your IT specialist to effectively evaluate software.   What about case management? Certain case management functions are ranked as more important than others by lawyers themselves, and this ranking should be taken into account when evaluating software programs. According to the American Bar Association’s annual report on technology trends in the legal industry, lawyers rate these case management software features most highly: Centralized case management Document management Time and billing Scheduling/calendaring Contact management A final feature to consider in your evaluation is client access, which is quickly growing in popularity. Access portals allow clients to easily and conveniently locate case information, view case-related documents, pay their bills and exchange secure messages with attorneys using the Web via desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Law practice management software may not be a make-or-break issue for your firm at this time, but with statistics showing more and more firms moving ahead in this area, it’s best not to be left behind at the starting line when your competitors are already in the race. The Advantages of Offboarding Seasonal Employees

The Advantages of Offboarding Seasonal Employees The Advantages of Offboarding Seasonal Employees The Advantages of Offboarding Seasonal Employees Conlan After the bustle of the holiday season, it may be tempting to jettison your seasonal employees with not much more than well-wishes. But this is a mistake; carefully offboarding seasonal employees offers a variety of advantages that makes it worth the effort. If offboarding is handled inefficiently or without the same care a company would take in the onboarding process, the organization risks damaging their reputation as an employer of choice, says Deb LaMere, vice president of employee engagement at Ceridian, a human resources software firm based in Minneapolis. This can lead to difficulty in attracting and retaining all types of workers, not just seasonal, and can affect the bottom line if the company cant find enough employees during the peak season. Knowing the advantages will help you do it right and make hiring for next season even easier. You Create Brand Advocates Seasonal employees can be excellent brand ambassadors if you treat them right, says Susan Vitale, chief marketing officer at iCIMS, a human resources software firm based in Matawan, New Jersey. Providing contingent workers with a favorable experience can lead to positive word-of-mouth, she says. Seasonal employees who had a good experience with your company can also serve as informal recruiters in future hiring seasons. You Cultivate Loyal Customers If a seasonal employee feels she has been treated as just another number during her time with you, she may do more than simply apply somewhere else next season she may reject your brand entirely. Our seasonal associates are also our customers, so we want to make sure they have a positive experience and want to continue to shop with us, says Trista Mulvey, recruiting projects coordinator at Bon-Ton Stores Inc., headquartered in York, Pennsylvania. You Build a Strong Candidate Pool Because offboarding seasonal employees shows them theyre valued, they will keep you in mind for the next season, Vitale says. A seasonal employee could turn into a repeat seasonal staff member or even a full-time employee down the line, she says. By preserving your relationship with each employee, you are increasing your chances of finding best-fit talent when you need to fill a permanent position. While offboarding seasonal employees takes some effort, setting up a system to standardize it makes things easier, LaMere says. This leads to efficiencies and treats everyone with respect in a fair and equal manner. LaMere recommends investing in software that can help the exit interview process, such as a survey, as well as a database to keep in touch with former employees. Mulvey says Bon-Ton completes exit interviews with seasonal hires and also sends electronic exit surveys to get feedback from seasonal employees. We want to ensure their time with us was positive. We also want to thank them, so they understand how much their time with us was valued and helped with a successful season. Engage with former employees after they leave, even if it was just a temporary position, Vitale says. Provide them with occasional updates on your company, keep them in your pool of talent and notify them with employment opportunities.

These Rescue Robots Can Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 2

These Rescue Robots Can Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 2 These Rescue Robots Can Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 2 These Rescue Robots Can Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 2 In Part 1 of The 7 Coolest Rescue Robots Tackle Almost Any Disaster, we introduced you to the unnamed, Centauro, and Cheetah robots. Here are four more of the worlds coolest rescue robots. 4. Advanced Cockroach Unlike the typical big and robust machines, these roach-inspired crawlers are lightweight and tiny. They are made to worm in and crawl through collapsed tunnels, fallen buildings, and other small and narrow terrains that humans cant access. Some of them can also climb stairs and vertical passageways. While they are still in test mode, their inventor, David Zarrouk at Ben Gurion University in Israel, said these tiny inexpensive bots can look for survivors after earthquakes, inspect contaminated passageways, or help with other search and rescue tasks. The Platypus serves many different applications. 5. Data-collecting Platypus Called Platypus, this miniature boat-like aquatic robot can navigate waterways polluted by oil spills or dumping while gathering water-quality data. It can carry multiple sensors and measure pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, depth, and other vitals. And it can work incognito. Once, Platypus was disguised as a crocodile as it ventured out among the hippo pods wallowing in Kenyas Mara River. It measured the amount of water pollution caused by hippos excrement. The decoy worked. The hippos tried attacking Platypus only once, said its creator, Paul Scerri. TRADR is slow but meticulous. 6. TRADR on Tracks TRADR was built to navigate dangerous and unpredictable environments, such as chemical spills, earthquake aftermaths or nuclear disasters. TRADR may be slow, but its very careful and meticulous. As it wheels through the unknown terrain, the robot uses a pair of flippers to probe the uncertain surfaces ahead and climb up and down piles of debris. Its name stands for Long-Term Human-Robot Teaming for Robot Assisted Disaster Responseand TRADR does exactly that. A team of these robots communicates with a human team and with each other as they map the dangerous area, note cleanup progress, or spot hazardous objects, such as a smoking pile or a barrel of gasoline. After researchers built the disaster recovery teams specs into TRADR, it performed well in earthquake situations, said project lead Ivana Kruijff-Korbayov from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. Zipline is an autonomous fixed-wing aircraft for use in remote locations. Image: Zipline 7. Autonomous Zipline Zipline may not be a search airplane, but it certainly scores high on the rescue part. This autonomous fixed-wing style aircraft can deliver medicine or blood supply to the most remote corners of the world four times faster than the average quadcopter drone. It can fly at 128 km/h while carrying 1.75 kg of cargo, with a round trip range of 160 km. Contracted by the government of Rwanda to deliver blood, plasma and platelets to 21 hospitals across the western half of the country, Zipline drones conducted over 4,000 flights in the past two yearsand about a third of them for emergency, life-saving situations. The companys long term-mission is to expand such delivery services to the rest of the world. Lina Zeldovich is an independent writer. How to Handle Tough Interview Questions Contest

How to Handle Tough Interview Questions Contest How to Handle Tough Interview Questions Contest A new ebook, “101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions,” has got you covered, and the publisher, Open Road Media, is giving away a free copy! “This no-nonsense guide will prepare you to leverage the trickiest questions to your advantage. Learn how to deal gracefully with complicated case interviews, various personality types, and even potentially illegal questions- all while avoiding common mistakes.” For a chance to win an ebook copy of “101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions,” go here to enter the contest*. *This contest has now ended and a winner has been chosen. And to learn how to handle tough interview questions, follow our favorite tips: Anticipate an interviewer’s concerns about your application. Most of the time, the manager or HR professional you’re interviewing with likes your candidacy overall, but they probably have at least one or two concerns about you. Look at your application objectively and try to anticipate what their concerns about you might be. Perhaps you don’t have a certain number of years experience or the right degree. Or maybe you have too much experience, or havent used a certain kind of software they use. Knowing what they’re worried about ahead of time will give you a chance to formulate answers to related questions. Research the company well ahead of time. To answer tough interview questions successfully, it’s critical that you research the company by spending time reviewing its website and/or recent press. Get to know its products or services, its recent initiatives, and the structure of the staff and teams. Figure out the company culture and norms by visiting social media sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Don’t leave any stone unturned when researching a company. Know what interviewers are usually looking for. What the interviewer is looking for is how your background and experience meshes with that of the company. Know at least three qualities and skills you can offer- and specify exactly how your qualities and skills are assets, both to the job and to the company as a whole. In the moment, take a deep breath and ask for a minute to think. One of the traps of the tough interview question is feeling like you have to answer IMMEDIATELY. But you can actually take a breath, pause, and even ask for a minute to think about it. You might even ask to come back to that question in a little bit. Interviewers know when their questions are tough, and asking for some time to think shows that you’re committed to providing them with solid info and you don’t mind needing to analyze or mull over something- in other words, you don’t act too quickly for your own good. Readers, what are your tips to handle tough interview questions? Leave a comment and let us know!

Was There a Teacher Who Influenced Your Career

Was There a Teacher Who Influenced Your Career In Honor of World Teachers' Day Was There a Teacher Who Influenced Your Career Those of us who are old enough to remember actor Tony Danza from the 1980s sitcoms Taxi and Who's the Boss? may be stunned or awed to know that he held a much different role as an English teacher at a Philadelphia high school during the 2009-10 academic year. Tony's temporary career change, which is documented in a new reality TV series that debuted last week, is both inspiring and eye-opening. In the pilot, a student asks if he's afraid to be teaching. His candid response: I'm terrified! And he had a sweat-soaked shirt in class to prove it. Here's a guy pushing 60 who doesn't really need the money (good thing, since a first-year teacher isnt paid all that much), putting himself out there in front of a group of high school sophomores, their demanding parents and administrators, while trying to communicate a love of literature, writing, and vocabulary building. As we observe World Teachers' Day today, Tony Danza's new role sheds light on how challenging and exhilarating a teacher's job can be. I was exposed to this in a small way when I worked as a substitute teacher a few years back. It led me to train as a part-time SAT prep teacher, a role I continue to perform. Trust me: It's not easy. You must know your stuff, and you also need to be an effective communicator, a good listener, a discussion facilitator, and you must be willing to admit - even to kids who are half or a third your age - that you don't have all the answers. The true payoff comes when students tell their teachers that they inspired them to pursue certain career goals or encouraged them to challenge themselves when they otherwise would not have. But teachers may wait a long while for that praise since many students don't realize until years after graduation how influential some of their teachers were. Some of us - and I count myself in this group - can even thank teachers who nudged us toward our chosen careers.

The Spray on Solar Cell

The Spray on Solar Cell The Spray on Solar Cell The Spray-On Solar Cell There are enough roofs, roads, and unused land in the U.S. to meet the electricity demands of the entire population with solar power. But were not likely to properly take advantage of all that surface area if we need to pave or tile it with high-cost, yard-wide, glass photovoltaic panels that are made a handful at a time. Now if we could simply spray our solar cells onto every available surface, our power needs would be met in the time it takes to trigger a spray gun. Researchers at IBM and the University of Toronto have shown that just such a manufacturing method is possible using quantum dots. Since the 1980s, these nanocrystals have been touted as the solution to everything. When you work with materials like these, in the first paragraph of every academic paper you write, or press release you do, you always talk about the promise of solution-processed semiconductors, and how they offer this opportunity to make low-cost devices, says Illian Kramer, an IBM researcher at the University of Toronto. You can make them large area, you can make them printable. Anything you can imagine doing with ink you can now do with a semiconductor. But then everyone goes and does research in the least manufacturing-friendly kind of wayusually something thats very human-intensive and batch processed, like spin coating, or dip coating, says Kramer. So we said, lets put our money where our mouth is and actually make a system which is kind of manufacturable. Spray coating seemed like a really logical first thing to try, so we walked over to the nearest art store and picked up an art store airbrush and it sort of evolved form there, he adds. U of T researcher Illan Kramer is working on a new way to spray solar cells onto flexible surfaces. Image: University of Toronto Droplet Size Quantum dots are called artificial atoms because they come in tiny clusters of 100 to 1,000 atoms each and work as single units. To tweak his system to the point where it could deposit a monolayer of dots at a time onto a surface, he and his team needed to get the droplet size down to as small as possible. They tweaked several parameters to do so, including the boiling point of the solvents, the length of spray time, and nozzle size. As the spray travels its 15 to 20 cm from nozzle to surface, the solvent evaporates and the concentration of quantum dots increases. We realized that, as the droplets arrive at the surface of the substrate, they need to be almost dry, just a tiny bit wet, to make them stick, says Kramer. The vapor pressure from the last bit of solvent before it evaporated would push them onto the surface. Pentane, heptane, and hexane left the droplets too drythey would just bounce off. Octane, though, did the trick. The nozzle that had the smallest mean droplet size was one used in the steel industry for cooling milling equipment. With the right solvent and nozzle, the layers of quantum dots make a glossy, glassy, brown finish. That finish has an efficiency of around eight, a good deal less than the 15 to 20 of photovoltaic cells currently on the market, but a good deal up from the .01 percent of a year and a half ago. Kramer hopes to get that number up to 10 or 12 soon. At that efficiency the spray-on cells become competitive thanks to their potential for mass production. Solar panels are built on the model of the microelectronics industry, which was optimized to make one-square-millimeter microchips, he says. If you want to cover square miles, you need to find a way to make them just as good in a lot larger batches, and a lot more quickly. Residential Solar Kramers initial vision was of a couple of Ghostbuster types arriving at a home, and spraying the stuff right onto the roof. That was always the picture I had in my mind that I used as motivation for this project, he says. Whether it ever becomes a reality is an unlikely question mark. A more likely setup would look something like a newspaper printing press, which, as Kramer points out, prints off miles of paper at a time, with a production floor that neednt be excessively clean. Youd have a giant drum with a roll of flexible substrate feeding another giant rum with a flexible substrate, he says. As the newspaper moves from one drum to the next, you are constantly spraying it to wind up with a finished device. And the chemical processing could be done in a standard lab. From the perspective of installing it in your home, if you can go to your local hardware store and buy a roll of solar cells, the way you would buy a roll of wallpaper, and just spread it across your roofthats a much lower barrier to entry for residential solar. Learn more about the latest energy technologies at ASME's Power and Energy 2015. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We said, let̢۪s put our money where our mouth is and actually make a system which is kind of manufacturable.Illian Kramer, an IBM researcher at the University of Toronto
